Supernatural is a North American dark fantasy series created by Eric Kripke, about two brothers – Sam and Dean – who hunt supernatural beings. It premiered on September 13th, 2005, starring Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester and Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester. Originally, the main story arc created by Kripke ended in season five, however the series is only going to end on the next season, season fifteenth, which will have twenty episodes and is premiering on October 10th, 2019.

Eric Kripke developed the series for almost 10 years, having originally envisioned Supernatural as movie. He wanted it to be a road trip series, since most of the legends the series explore are urban, from small towns across the country. The brothers’ original names were Sal and Dean, a tribute to Jack Kerouac’s novel “On the Road”, this combined with Kripke’s interest in the Winchester’s Mystery House as well as his desire for the series to have the feel of a modern-day Western, he settled for the name Winchester and Sam and Dean.
One of the characteristics of the show is its music. Supernatural features a mix of the orchestral score with traditional acoustic instruments – guitars and cellos – however, the series uses mostly classic rock and some iconic songs even give a name to a few episodes. Most of the songs are from Kripke’s private collection, and bands like Led Zeppelin, Blue Oyster Cult, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Rush, Boston and AC/DC have been played on multiple episodes, on the last episode of every season, the song “Carry on Wayward Son” by Kansas always plays on the series resume – “The Road So Far” – making it the series official song.
The series primarily focuses on the brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, as they travel throughout the country hunting down evil supernatural creatures. John Winchester, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, is their father and he makes an appearance in the pilot episode, only returning hallway through the first season and dying at the end of this season. He is killed by the yellow-eyed demon Azazel, who killed the brother’s mother and made Sam drink demon’s blood while he was still in the crib.

Even though Sam and Dean Winchester are the main characters, there are also other characters that play a major role: Bobby Singer, played by the actor Jim Beaver, an old family friend who also becomes a surrogate father to the brothers; Ellen and Joe Harvelle (Samantha Ferris an Alona Tal), the mother and daughter duo who own a bar and are also hunters. On the third season, the demon Ruby (Katie Cassidy and later Genevieve Cortese – who later marries Jared Padalecki), claims to be an ally to the Winchesters, eventually betrays them and creates an edge between the brothers, making Sam drink demon blood to increase his powers and make his body stronger – he is Lucifer’s – one of fan favourites - (Mark Pellegrino) vessel and Dean is Michael’s and the Apocalypse was supposed to start with them saying yes to both Lucifer and Michael respectfully.

With this Christian mythology, another important character is presented – Castiel (played by Misha Collins), the angel who saves Dean from hell and keeps helping – and dying – for the Winchesters. In Season, another recurrent character is presented – Crowley (Mark sheppard) – he is the Winchester’s longest-recurring antagonist and anti-hero in the series.

Season 7 introduces two other fan-favorite characters: Kevin Tran (Osric Chau), a prophet of the Lord and Charlie Bradbury (Felicia Day) a tech-savvy geek and nerd. They both become allies to the Winchesters and help them in their hunts and solving their problems, eventually losing their life due to this. Another main recurring character to the series is their car Baby, a 67 Chevy Impala, which even has its own episode.

Supernatural has been the longest fantasy series on television, having premiered on September 13th 2005, announcing its last season this year, season 15. For 15 long years, we the fans, have been following the series – even when the stories were stretched and did not make much sense – because most of us grew up with it; we have related to the characters, being able to see our problems in the characters’ problems (minus the supernatural beings). The show has started its own support system for people suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts. One thing the show has taught us is “Family don’t end in blood”, so we are a global family, looking out and taking care of each other and that is what makes us, and this series, different from the others, and that’s also why we will keep being a family after the series has come to an end.
